CBP U.S. Border Patrol Agents Seize Assault Rifles, Ammunition
Fronton, Texas ─ U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Rio Grande Valley Sector seized several assault rifles and rounds of ammunition Monday near the Rio Grande. The seizure occurred when agents working near the river discovered a large duffel bag hidden in some brush. Inside the bag agents found six assault rifles, 26 magazines and more than 360 rounds of ammunition. “These deadly weapons could have had a devastating impact on communities on both sides of the border and to our agents or other law enforcement officers,” said Chief Patrol Agent Rosendo Hinojosa. “The vigilance of these agents saved lives that would have been lost had these weapons ended up in the hands of violent criminals.”The weapons, ammunition and magazines will be turned over to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for further investigation.To report suspicious activity, call the Rio Grande Valley Sector’s toll-free telephone number at (800) 863-9382.U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry.
